MMS does not work unless cellular data is on
I understand that MMS does not work unless the data is on but is there really no notification or anything that an MMS has been sent?
iPhone 11, iOS 13

No there isn't, there would be notification of an SMS message being sent and if a picture is attached (which requires MMS) it would not go through.
That would be correct.
MMS only goes over cellular data because the network does not know about Wi-Fi connections. The same for visual voicemail.
With my Samsung phone before, I receive notification that an phto has been sent to me and that I need to download it, so I know that I should turn my cellular data on. I just thought it would be the same with the iphone.
If you're on WiFi at home, then why are you worried about cellular data? There is no reason to turn it off. If you're on WiFi, WiFi will be used. It will only resort to using cellular data if the WiFi isn't working properly or in cases like MMS messaging, where it is required.
I understand that it only goes over cellular data. My question is if there is really no notification saying that: hey you received an MMS or a picture or something..
But since you all said there isn't, I think I'm good. thanks everyone.
so that means I wouldnt know that someone sent me an MMS or a picture? unless they told me so?
That's correct. Why in the world would you turn off cellular data to begin with? That defeats the entire purpose of having a smartphone.
I use wifi when I am at home.
If you use WiFi when you are home then MMS will come through but there is no reason to turn off cell data.
