iPhone X, USB ports on airplanes and USB data blockers
I’m experiencing a really strange problem. I fly a lot for work. I’m also an information security consultant. So, I never plug my phone into the USB ports on the inflight entertainment system (IFES) as this is a big security risk. However, using a USB data blocker (sometimes referred to as a USB condom) blocks the data pins and only allows the device to be charged. Here’s where the problem comes in. Anytime I use a USB data blocker with my iPhone X it makes the USB port in the IFES inoperable. Once it becomes inoperable, it won’t work again until the system is powered off and on again.
so, as a network engineer, I decided to do some testing. I’ve tried multiple cables and USB data blockers from different manufacturers
Same result.
Test plan:
1) plug in my iPhone X using a lightning cable for testing purposes, I’m using the lightning cable that came with the iPhone. So, no third party cable issues. The iPhone charges fine. I plug and unplug it several times and it charges fine.
2) I put the data blocker (again I’ve tried many different manufacturers) on the USB cable and plug it into the IFES USB port. I plug in the lightning cable to my iPhone X.
3) The iPhone says it charging for a very short time (maybe a second) and then it shows not charging.
4) Plugging abs unplugging the phone or USB side of the cable has no effect.
5) I unplug everything and put the original Apple lightning cable back into the IFES USB port and plug the lightning cable into the iPhone X. Now it doesn’t charge without the data blocker. The IFES USB is now inoperable.
I’ve tested this same scenario with my wife’s Samsung Galaxy S9+. The data blocker works fine with the S9+.
I’ve contacted the data blocker manufacturers and they don’t have any problems reported.
Any ideas?
