how can you open the messages app on an iPad without it automatically selecting and displaying the last message opened?

how can you open the messages app on an iPad without it automatically selecting and displaying the last message opened?
The only way that I know to do that is to tap on the new Message icon which will open a blank window on the right. Whether you suspen the messages app or completely quit, it should open to that open window on the right again.
Other than doing this, you can’t achieve what you want to do. Not the most elegant way to do it, but it does work.
