Using Apple Pro Speakers With A Newer Computer

A question that’s popped up on this forum over the years goes something like this:

"I would like to be able to connect the pair of perspex globe Apple Pro Speakers with mini-jack that came with my PowerPC G4 Mac to my newer computer.  Is it possible to connect them with an adaptor, or by some other means?"

It’s far from an ideal solution, but if your G4 iMac still works and has an Audio MIDI Setup app, you can play your new computer’s audio through the Apple Pro Speakers on the cheap.  All you’ll need is a 3.5mm male-to-male audio cable.

Connect one end of the cable to your G4 iMac’s audio input jack, and connect the other end to your new computer’s headphone jack.  Start the G4 iMac and launch Audio MIDI Setup.  (On OS 10.3.9 Panther, it’s located in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder.)  Select “Line In” as the audio input source, and check the “Thru” box to select play-through.  The G4 iMac will play its audio input from the new computer directly into the Apple Pro speakers.
