installing apps on child's iphone

I recently reset my iPhone 5s and am giving it to my son to use. Before that I set up a child account under my own with his own icloud address. He can sign in and access the built-in apps, however when I try and install apps such as Life360, I am unable to install them. The message comes up that "a request to get Life360 will be sent to your parent..." but I don't get any notification. My account is associated with a gmail address and I do not have another iOS or MAC device. I cannot access my icloud mail because it says an "icloud email is needed".

Hello s.c.blair,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I see from your message that you're not receiving the request to approve an app that your son wants to download.

You've done a great job providing the details of how you set up his account, as well as the message he is seeing. Under, "Approve or decline a request," you what the request you should receive looks like: Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy

So long as you are the family organizer, or a designated adult who can approve purchases, you'll receive the notification on your iPhone. No worries about your Apple ID being a Gmail address. You can use any email for your Apple ID: About your Apple ID email addresses

Check the Notification Center to see if the request is present. This article will show you how to find all your notifications that you haven't responded to:  View and respond to notifications on iPhone

If you're still not seeing the notifications, follow the troubleshooting steps in this article for more help: If Ask to Buy isn't working

Lastly, if you find you need more assistance, Contact Apple Support.

All the best!

I am not receiving any notifications, because the phone is now in my son's account and we don't have any other i-devices. I tried signing my son out of his account on the phone and signing back in again but it didn't help.
