I cannot get it to display the audio files like the help section shows

I just started using Final Cut, and I cannot get it to display the audio files like the help section shows, which is also how I am used to seeing it in Adobe Premiere Elements.. When I select each clip individually, the clips audio is displayed that way under Audio Configuration on the right panel, but the workspace underneath just shows the audio files as nondistinct blocks, and I cannot select portions to fade the audio. When I select "Display Audio Animation" for the audio file, it just shows "Audio Animation" in the block. How can I get it to display that way?
