Apple Watch series 3 overheat icon won't go away

My daughter's apple watch suddenly gave her the thermometer icon in the middle of a school day last week. No extreme temperatures and the watch didn't feel hot. Now it won't connect to her phone and nothing happens when I try to do a hard reset. It's been 3 days and it still just shows the time and thermometer icon. Any ideas what to try next?
