Turn off all connections from the watch to the phone

Hello! I just purchased the Apple Watch Series 4 and use airplane mode to preserve battery life while I sleep. I’m trying to sever all connections to the phone during this time. When I select airplane mode on the watch, all connections are severed, but in about 10 seconds the Bluetooth On the Watch reconnects to the phone. Does anyone know how to turn all connections off?
