Be sure you have charged your new MacBook Pro completely. This requires it to be connected to the power adapter for Many Hours beyond the point where it says 100 percent charged. Best results are obtained from leaving it connected overnight while powered off. It will NEVER over-charge.

In the morning, use the procedures in this article to reset the System Management controller. Be sure to use the keys in the EXACT locations specified -- the keys on the other side of the keyboard with the same labels are not "wired in" and will not do the job:

Three micro-controllers work together to manage the charge level in your computer on a moment-by-moment basis. It will never over-charge, even if you leave it on power adapter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Best practice is to connect to power when available, and when no power is available use it on battery until it warns you it is getting low.

Re-connect to power and allow it to charge back up at your earliest opportunity, do not store in the discharged state for any length of time. Do not allow it to get too hot, even when off, such as in a hot car.

The procedures cited may turn out to be applicable to similar models as well. "It can't hurt."
