Disappearing screenshots - or do they?

I've found, since Catalina, that if I take a screenshot (Cmd-shift-4) I get an image at the bottom left of my screen, but the file doesn't appear on my desktop so I can't double-click it to open it in Preview.

However, if I start Preview and click 'Open', the file is on the desktop.

Screenshot below shows the desktop with two files on it but the Open screen in Preview (or even attaching a file from this posting screen) shows all the files...

Anybody know what's going on, please?

OK, so this is weird. After submitting the questions to this forum, I closed my browser and just two files were shown on the desktop screen.

I opened and emptied the Bin and all the 'missing' screenshots I'd taken to post the question, have appeared.

Now I'm confused!

A couple things, sometimes there is a delay before the screen shot appears. I assume it depends on what you are taking a screen shot of and what else the Mac may be doing. You may also want to press "command shift 5", then click "Options". from there, you can make sure the timer is set to "None" and you can send screen shots directly to Preview if you so choose.

Hi dialabrain,

Thanks for the pointers - I'm so used to using Command-Shift-4 I 'd completely forgotten there where other options!

Sadly though, the settings are set to show the screenshot immediately (no delay) and save to desktop. I'll experiment with that, though.

I've never had the delay before Catalina and I was wondering if it's being buggy. I've got an iMac Pro with generally very little running on it, so I might clear the caches and reboot, to see if that makes a difference.
