Apple lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter - unable to transfer pictures to and from USB drive

I'm using 2019 iPad 10.2 running iPad OS 13.2.3. USB thumb drive is formatted as FAT32. I have external power supply to the camera adapter. I want to be able to move pictures to the iPad from USB and vice versa.

I get same error message (when moving from iPad or moving to iPad) which says that the file couldn't be opened - regardless of the file format I'm using (JPEG, HEIC, etc).

Any recommendations?

Hello,

While Apple states that FAT32 is supported, 90% of people who try using FAT32 on iPad result in random error messages. Most drive formats that are compatible with Windows are not compatible with iPad.

On the iPad (using the Files App) I can read the USB and see the pictures. I just can't transfer them to and from the iPad. It gets stranger: everything works like a charm using my 2017 10.5" iPad Pro. I don't understand why it works on one iPad and not the other.

Thanks for the reply. I reformatted my USB thumb drive to Mac OS Extended. I tried copying some pictures from the USB to my iPad and still get the same error message: "The Operation Can't Be Completed. The file "DSC1234.jpg couldn't be opened."

I have no idea what I'm missing or doing wrong.
