Excel vs numbers
Downloaded Word on mac bk pro. Immediately Excel docs were taken over by Numbers. I didn't choose it, or ask for it, or pay for it. Also, I thought Word was free? No?
MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.15

If they're not already on your Mac just go to the Mac App Store and you will see. There's no equivalent for Access, but there are rough equivalents for Word (=Pages), Excel (Numbers), and Powerpoint (Keynote). Note that while there are broad similarities, the Apple apps are different, and sometimes different.
Excel, of course, can also run on the Mac (you can get it on the Mac App Store) and it is very good. There's no substitute for it if you need to collaborate with other Excel users.
If you find that double-clicking a file opens it an an application you don't want you can click the file once in Finder, type command-i and change the pick under 'open with:

One addition o SG's note:
If you want to open all files of this type using the application you chose for 'this' file, click the "Change all" item indicated below:
"like this one" means "with the same file extension"—in this case .xlsx

Hi mkjenson,
If you haven't bought or rented Word or Excel you do not have them on your machine. They are Microsoft products.
Numbers and Pages which are Apple products are probably included with your mac book.
If you do not have excel on your machine, Numbers will open excel files and does a decent job, I understand, of importing them. Unless you export them back to excel with the same name your originals will remain.

Are all the Apple apps that pertain to Office--numbers, pages, etc.--free?
