Mac sudden problem iCloud apps not connecting

Today I started having a problem using my Mac and having apps connect to my iCloud account. I randomly get this error message:

This Mac can’t connect to iCloud because of a problem with “xxxxxxxx@xxxxxxx” (my apple ID). It then says "open iCloud preferences to fix this problem".

However, when i click on the iCloud preferences button it will not accept my apple ID password...basically saying it's wrong (but it's not). It will randomly work off and on. My other apple devices don't seem to be having a problem and I can log into my iCloud account through safari w/o any problems.

How do I get this annoying error cleaned up and fixed? It is also hanging programs up and not letting me to "shut down" my computer.

Frustrating....help and thank you!!!

Greetings shellapp,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand you're receiving an error on your Mac that you're unable to connect to iCloud due to a problem, and to open iCloud preferences to fix the issue. However, your Apple ID password isn't recognized when attempting to verify your information, and this is causing you to be unable to shut down your Mac normally.

I suggest ensuring your Mac has the latest version of macOS, and that your Mac meets the needed iCloud system requirements. You can see those steps in the "Get started" section of the following article: Get help with iCloud - Apple Support

Additionally, you may need to force an app to quit to help shut down your Mac: How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support

If further help is needed, then I suggest reaching out to Apple Support: Get Support

Kind regards.
