I have OS High Sierra 10.13.8 on my iMacwhich I purchased in 2011 Serial no: S CK04411QDNR.

Can I update to the latest OS Catalina?

no, it can't get higher than high sierra mojave requirements are iMac (Late 2012 or newer)

the video card of the 2011 model does not support the new graphic system called Metal

I am somewhat hesitant to purchase a new iMac.

The reason is not financial, but because of my age of +85 years!

you need not get a new computer or update to latest macOS version, they continue to support High Sierra with security and bug fixes
