Mid-2010 iMacs will not command-R unless the recovery partition was properly installed in the first place and/or the firmware for Lion Recovery was installed. July 20, 2011 and later Macs have the firmware for internet restore built-in. Earlier Macs needed a special firmware for the command-option-R recovery to work. March 2010, and later Macs to Lion's release, also had the disadvantage of requiring the system specific 10.6 installer discs to install 10.6 if the firmware was not installed and recovery was not working. The advice Grant1368 may fail if these other situations were not taken into account and apply.

A new hard drive will require internet recovery if no Snow Leopard disc is present and the Mac came with Snow Leopard.

Clone backups invariably can get one out of this sticky mess.

This worked for me on my 2010 MBP. I found it in a fix linked to a previous security update.

Open Terminal and enter the following:

1. rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/*

2. sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

3. killall Dock

4. sudo mdutil -E /

5. Reboot

6. sudo softwareupdate -i -a --verbose

7. Reboot when prompted

I had to manually restart at step 5, I then got a prompt to install the update. Everything worked fine after that.
