In the default Photos app, how do I save an edited photo or video by overwriting the old file or as a new file without references to the old file? It seems as of iOS 13 these options are gone; even duplicating files now keeps references to the original file that can be reverted to. WHY?

There is no simple and quick way. I would save the original video to a computer, then share the edited version to a shared album. In the shared album the trimmed video will be in a space saving format. You can save it back from the shared album and delete the original from the iPhono.
Looks like "Save Video as New Clip" was added in iOS 13.3, resolving this. Now if only they'd attempt to fix all the other issues. 😆
Among other issues with the lack of an overwrite or save-as-new function, it forces a waste of storage space, especially if large videos are significantly cut. If Apple does this sorta thing everywhere then no wonder their devices get clogged so easily.
Nonetheless, this also needs to be done for photos, not just videos; there needs to be a "Save Photo as New Copy" feature that doesn't retain references to the original photo (that can be reverted to even after duplication).
Anyone know a faster, more convenient workaround than uploading then downloading?
