As noted the hard drive has probably failed. See If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support. Replacement hard drives appear to be hard to come by, but there are SD adaptor kits on the market.

Hello,
Unfortunately this means that your iPod's hard disk has crashed. There is no way to have this iPod repaired as it was obsoleted by Apple nearly a decade ago. You cannot trade in an obsolete device for a newer device.
