iMovie has a 16:9 screen aspect ratio that cannot be changed. Vertical videos taken on an iPhone will have black bars on each side to make the video fit the 16:9 dimensions of iMovie's screen. You can eliminate the black bars by using the Crop to Fill setting that you will see when you select the clip and click on the crop icon (the one that looks like intersecting angles) in the tool bar at the top of your page. That would crop the image to fit the screen but would involve a substantial cropping that might not be satisfactory. On the other hand, depending on the subject matter of the clip, the crop may work out fine.

You can also use the crop tool's rotation feature to rotate the vertical video sideways so that it occupies the whole screen. Then you can share it out sideways and use QuickTimePlayer to rotate it back to vertical. The black bars would then be eliminated in the shared out movie, whereas the bars would have remained if you had shared out without first rotating the clip.

If it is the black color that is unwanted, you can eliminate that by placing the vertical video as a cutaway above a different color background, or above a photo or other video clip, and then the underlying background or other media will take the place of the black bars.
