I zipped several files a few months ago using Mohave on my Mac. Recently got a new computer (with OS Catalina) and now they won't unzip. I've read Catalina doesn't recognize 32bit zips anymore. Suggestions appreciated (FYI I'm not an IT person so dumb it down for me.) thanks!

Just to clarify, I think you mean that MacOS Catalina drops support for 32 bit applications not zips.
I would try downloading a copy of The Unarchiver and see if you can open the zip files using that utility.
It's more powerful then the built in utility and it should be able to open the zip files you have.

This is not your issue " Catalina doesn't recognize 32bit zips anymore."
I do not seeing a exit codes defined "Error 79"
Are you getting any other error message or dialog?
I just open a old zip file from 2009 with no issues as a test.
Did you try a different unzip app.?

Thanks! I just tried it and it worked - but only unzipped A-H. I don't know what that means but I guess I should be happy I got half of it. Lol
