Completely agree - I will correct if someone from Apple comes thru, but it really appears they are flat out misleading everyone on their "at the check-out" statement. This is the same deal you can get from any carrier, they are just attaching their credit card to the auto-pay - do you think they intentionally insulting us or are they that unaware? And to add salt to the wound, Apple is promoting this as "transparency".....Here are their marketing quotes (unchanged, cut right from their site--I changed the print type) - as an "at the check-out promotion" does not require you to

It represents all the things Apple stands for. Like simplicity, transparency, and privacy.

Easily apply right at checkout.

If you already have Apple Card there’s no additional application. And if you don’t, you can apply for Apple Card in as little as a minute and use Apple Card Monthly Installments right away.2You get 3% Daily Cash back on the purchase price of your new iPhone. And you don’t have to wait two years to get it. Your Daily Cash is automatically added to your Apple Cash card in the Wallet app.3

Trade in your iPhone and pay even less per month.

Save on the new iPhone you want, instantly at checkout. Trade in your old iPhone and the purchase price — and your monthly installment payments — could be even lower.4 You don’t have to send in your iPhone first to find out what it’s worth.

It is promoted as a deal at checkout if you use your card. You can get those payments from anyone - verizon directly, any card, it is not a deal....They are selling it as the price you pay at checkout, prorated. The Apple Store is not helpful. How (if anyone) is responsible for this? I have been getting a full run around...when it seems like a bug - but maybe Apple doesn't recognize them anymore.

From what I have learned so far, Apple Card Monthly Installments is tied to having the Apple Card which lives in your Apple wallet. This payment method is only visible through your device which has the Apple Card in your wallet app. As far as I can tell, the Apple Store personnel cannot see this payment option on the iPads they use because they do not have your apple card in their wallet. Maybe in the future the store will be able to select your apple card (or enter it) and then be able to offer it. But for now, it seems you can only get this payment method through your own device.

As noted, you must also select a carrier for this option to be available (unlocked and SIM Free option is always a one-time payment) AND

  1. your device must have the apple wallet app with your apple card (meaning the device has touch or facial ID)
  2. The device must be IOS 13 minimum to use the Apple Store app, otherwise
  3. with a device running an older IOS or Mac OS as noted above, you must use the Safari browser to buy through apple.com

Bottom line, this is an online selection and if the Apple Card Monthly Installment payment option does not appear in the apple store app or via apple.com in your safari browser, then something doesn't meet the above criteria.

Yes, it is a deal with the Apple Card, but as you look at it, it has to do with making the purchase after making a carrier selection, not making the purchase with the carrier's financing deal. I made this clip from the Apple Store app to show the differences, using the Verizon selection. You would need to discuss the rest with Apple as to why it couldn't be done at the store itself. I'm just a user like you, I don't make the rules.

Unfortunately, this information is not accurate. No one at apple knows how to sell you a phone using Apple card monthly installments. They don't know the difference between Apple iPhone payments (financed by citizens bank) and aApple card monthly installments (financed by your apple card through goldman sachs). I wanted an unlocked iPhone 11 with applecare and apple card monthly installments. Apple iPhone payments do not include AppleCare UNLESS you sign up for their iPhone upgrade program. There is no option to select monthly installments when using your apple card. I did an online chat with apple; they told me to select one-time payment and then use my apple card, but there was no installment option. Went to the apple store; they had no clue how to do installments with the apple card; didn't even know what I was talking about. Called their support line and they told me to use one time payment and it would automatically do installments because it was a December promotion on any purchase of an iPhone with the apple card. It was a LIE.

They do say that my older IOS phone will not display the installments but they also say that the statement will show the installments. Not true. Now, I get my December statement without any installment information and I'm stuck with a large one time payment.

Maybe it only works if you are already on upgraded technology and IOS versions...but they don't say that, they just say installments won't display.

Apple card monthly installments is not ready for public consumption. Just go through your carrier and if you want an unlocked phone like I did, the carrier will unlock it after it ia paid off.

When you select a carrier (in my case ATT), you are offered Apple iPhone Payments (Citizens One financing but no AppleCare can be added), Apple iPhone upgrade program (Citizens One financing, includes AppleCare but you must enroll in the upgrade program), One-time payment (AppleCare can be added) OR the ATT installment plan (ATT financing, locked phone until paid and AppleCare can be added).

According to the website, the phone is unlocked unless you pick the ATT installment plan...so, yes, I wanted an unlocked phone but it didn't really matter since I wanted to buy with my Apple Card with Monthly installments. If this meant it would have been locked until I paid it off and later had it unlocked...no big deal.

In any case, the bigger issue is that there is NO OPTION to select Apple Card Monthly Installments either at the apple.com website OR through the apple store iPhone app.

No one at the Apple Store knew how to sell me a phone using my apple card to get the monthly installments; they kept using their little iPads to select options from the same webpage I looked at and told me I had to use Apple iPhone payments (not apple card) and I would HAVE to sign up for the upgrade program to get AppleCare. I did not buy it at the store. Then, the Apple rep I spoke to on the phone walked me through the purchase online and said you have to select One-time payment and pay with the Apple Card to get monthly installments. When I told her that monthly installments wasn't listed as an option, she said it would automatically bill me in installments. Not True. It didn't.

Bottom line; I have yet to speak to anyone who knows how to sell one with Apple Card monthly installments or what keystrokes/selections you must choose on the website to do so.

My advice; just go with the carrier payment plans until Apple can figure out how to get their systems and services to match their advertising.

I thought I would share what I have learned about Apple Card Monthly Installments. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple support folks from 5 different departments.

No one at Apple could specifically tell me how to purchase a phone with the Apple Card Monthly Installment plan BUT the last person I spoke with did lead me to the answer, finally!

They sent me the following list of requirements;

•  iOS 132 or above on the Apple Store app (When possible, customers should be encouraged to complete their purchase using the Apple Store app.)

•  iOS 12.4 or above using Safari

•  Mac OS 10.14.6 or above and using Safari.

I run Mac OS 10.15.2 on my Mac but when I use Safari to go to the apple.com website this way, this payment option is not available. When I asked Apple about this, they finally told me that you cannot get the Apple Card Monthly Installment plan from your Mac, You have to be using your phone because it is tied to your Apple Wallet.

But, what I discovered based on the above is that since have an iPhone 6 and can't run anything above IOS 12.4, the Apple Store App on my phone won't display the option to purchase with Monthly Installments option.

Instead, I have to use the Safari browser on my phone to go to the Apple.com website. When I do this, the option for Apple Card Monthly Installments is available to me. Apple support kept telling me to use the app and it just didn't occur to me to use the browser on my phone instead.

So, if you are using an older phone that is running IOS 12.4 or below and you want to upgrade to a new iPhone using the Apple Card Monthly Installment payment option, you must use your phone's Safari browser to order via the Apple.com website. Don't use the Apple store app unless you are on IOS 13.2 or above.

Hope this helps someone down the road; I paid a hefty price for this little gem of information.

Point of clarification for the OP; If you buy using Apple Card Monthly Installments, based on what Apple says on their website, the phone will be unlocked. But, you must select which carrier you will be using; they will of course charge you the carrier activation fee and include a new SIM card. Apple Card Monthly Installments is not available if you select "Unlocked and SIM Free"; it would be a one-time payment.

Jan 3, 2020 10:39 PM in response to NickD99

Thanks a lot! I went to Apple store and asked for monthly installments. Guy told that it should work, I bought new iPhone with Apple Card, but it seems to me he didn’t understand anything about this type of payment. So I’m just waiting for next billing period on my card to see what will happen.

All I think that EVERYBODY in Apple are completely incompetent in this question.

Jan 3, 2020 11:23 PM in response to Leshy4

I hope it works out for you. In my case, they told me the only option would be to return the phone I purchased and re-purchase a new one using the Monthly Installments; but at the time they still couldn't tell me how to even get the monthly installments PLUS too much hassle.

Instead, If I pay the phone off in 6 months or less, I can use the 6% cash back I received to cover the interest charges on the Apple Card and break even. Six payments is a bit painful compared to 24 but I can make it work.

Jan 19, 2020 8:27 PM in response to NickD99

6% cash back? How did you get this? 6 hours at the Apple store - that program is a hot mess. They told me to call Goldman - only they could fix it, Goldman told me to talk to the Apple store manager - who was the one who pushed the call button on my phone?!?!

If anyone knows how to get a person who can help with this, please post. Such a hot mess, and only opened the card to get the installments - Then they ran round and round....Apple - Goldman - Verizon - full circle!

Jan 19, 2020 8:39 PM in response to OPDR

The only way to get the Apple Card payments is to make the purchase online on the iPhone or iPad, using the Apple Store app. And, you must select a carrier to be eligible. I'm looking at it with my iPhone right now. If you use the Verizon Device Payment Program, it does not qualify for 3% cash back with the Apple Card. As far as the 6% cash back quoted in the earlier response, it is currently only 3% for the Apple Card, however for the last 3 weeks of December 2019, Apple increased the cash back to 6% on Apple products purchased with the Apple Card. I did that for my new MacBook Air and that 6% back was sweet.

Jan 20, 2020 5:33 AM in response to ChrisJ4203

Thanks. I made the purchase on-line, using the apple store app. I did get military pricing, which involves a verify ID and then a note (after verification) saying you are returning the apple.com.

It was a replacement for a stolen, then broken phone, so I was already on the verizon contract/account. I just needed a phone. The apple card promotion is clear it is a credit card deal, NOT a carrier contract, so not sure why, if it is a credit card deal, it is so difficult to do. Purchased iPhone 11 THRU apple.com, pay verizon for the phone service, but apple for the phone. Why can it not do the installment.

Clearly not ready for prime time. So disappointed and frustrated.

Jan 20, 2020 11:46 AM in response to NickD99

Thanks. Yes, so that is a carrier-specific promotion, not one for the apple credit card. Being an old-school accountant, hard not to separate the checks and balances of the promotion - this is sold as an apple promotion for phones purchased from them (not based on phone price -- they could say "only for purchases over X dollar").

Apple (directly, not via Verizon/ATT/etc) offers military discounts on their iPhones (military pricing for both phones and AppleCare). Military discounts CANNOT be used with carriers/carrier deals -- so basically if you buy from a carrier you get the same deal as if you buy from Apple - correct? A credit card promotion is a credit card promotion. They cannot seem to separate the purchase from the financing (which any bank card would know - this is what they mean when they say, we are not a bank).

Barclay finances anything purchased from the apple store for free (length is based on the purchase price). That is a credit card promotion. Apple card is either not a credit card promotion, or not ready for prime time an apply has no one in charge of promotions to correct their bugs. Not a good way to entice people into a credit card and/or customer service. Too much competition in the credit card world to put up with lack of service. Seriously, I think they need someone actually doing marketing at Apple who understands boundaries - checks - balances.

Really disappointed and would not recommend the card to anyone. Heard of 2 friends with similar (who is in charge) type of questions in the last 2 weeks (AirPods and MacBook related), so same problem, different parts of the company.

Not looking good....and they want to get into medical devices? Very scary thought.

Jan 20, 2020 12:46 PM in response to OPDR

Well, I agree that the stores and their support folks are clueless about how the Apple card promotion and Apple Card Monthly Installments works. That is the most frustrating part as I got burned and ended up without the promotion and had to make a one-time payment. But, It is an Apple promotion using the Apple card. The only issue with having to select the carrier is related to the fact that Apples' promotion is based on activating the phone with a selected carrier. Not sure whether that is Apple's choice or some arrangement Apple agreed to with the carriers. Certainly, this ensures that the carriers gets their "activation" fee (IE: a cut of the deal).

If you have an iPhone with IOS 13 or later, this is an easy self-purchase. But, you don't have to have an iPhone to purchase one with Apple Card monthly Installments. You can purchase this way with Safari on a computer/iPad if your device has Touch ID (or Face ID), has the Apple Wallet app installed (which you can only do with such a device) and you have applied for and have Apple Card in your Wallet.

Only then is the option visible. But, I totally get your frustration. That is why after MANY hours of research I posted my findings here for others because Apple Support and Stores cannot help with this (yet).
