I have a Mac mini, 2010 that I am trying to use as a media server, playing back my mp3 collection and I would like to be able to watch Apple TV. I have a account with apple, for email etc, but I am unable to connect to the apple store using that ID. Is this a shut out for this computer by apple? I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5

The issue is that the version of Safari (or any other web browser), that works with OS X Lion, uses a security protocol that is outdated. This will prevent your mini from accessing most, if not all, secure web sites that use TLS 1.2 to create the connection ... like the Apple App or iTunes stores.
However, you should be able to upgrade your Mid 2010 Mac mini to either OS X El Capitan, macOS Sierra, or macOS High Sierra to resolve this.

I suggest that you boot up your Mac in Safe Mode, and then, try upgrading to OS X El Capitan again. Also, if not already, temporarily connect your mini to the network by Ethernet and don't use Wi-Fi for the install process.

In theory, you should be able to successfully upgrade directly from OS X Lion to OS X El Capitan, then from El Capitan to macOS Sierra. Just to make sure I understand what you wrote. Are you saying that you were successful in upgrading to El Capitan? ... and to macOS Sierra? ... or are you saying neither upgrade worked?
It's me again. I downloaded OS X El Capitan, the install app ran the systems check to be able to install, ran packages then gave me the summary statement, Installation complete. Next step I tried to install macOS Sierra. The same thing happened. I would appreciate any insight you may have on this.
Hi, sorry if I was not clear. I am not able to upgrade from Lion to another OS. I get stuck in the same place in the install as described above. The first step runs, verifying packages, and then after only about 3 minutes total, I get a message stating that the install was successful and the newer OS has in fact not been installed.
