Logic Board Replacement/Upgrade Possible???

Hi, I blew up my logic board on my MBP 13” mid 2012 trying to power from a 12volt DC supply - frustrated that Apple doesn’t offer a DC-DC charging option, I resorted to making my own. It was getting old and I was moving to a newer machine, but not a laptop, both the comp and the monitor I was able to power DC direct (no powerblocks/transformers). I’d kind of like having a laptop again, so thinking to repair this MBP.

I have verified mine is the Core i5 2.5 Ghz, but I am wondering if I would be able to replace with a Core i7 2.9 GHz version? I see from another thread that is closed they were each possible in the mid 2012 A1278 body.

If I am able to locate an i7 and it would work, would I see a difference in my MBP? I’m no super user, but if it’s gonna cost my ~$50 more then the ~$150 for the i5 I think it would be worth it to get a year or two more out of this MBP.

Thanks for any advice!

PS... I did take it into a Mac repair shop and they verified it was the logic board, not the Magsafe “connector”/module inside as they did try both and it fired up (batt’s completely dead).

If the Logic Board you are planning to get is for the exact same model series (such as 13" MBPro mid-2012), then it will work. If the Logic Board is from an older pre-2012 model, then it may work if you are willing to modify the case since one of the Logic Board mount points may be in the wrong position. I recently fit a 2010 Logic Board into I believe a 2012 Top Case after removing one mounting stud and transferring the center mounting bracket.

You cannot swap Logic Boards between Retina and non-Retina models since the layout is completely different. It goes without saying that you cannot swap Logic Boards between 13" & 15" models.

Hope this helps you.

I have the same model and if you have the stock 5400 rpm drive in it as well as 8 GB RAM, you can quite easily replace your super slow 5400 rpm spinning drive with an SSD and upgrade the RAM as well. I did and it was quite a difference. As for the processor - no, you cannot. OWC (macsales.com) has great install videos as well as the SSDs and RAM:

As long as you are replacing the whole Logic Board (mid-2012 Logic Board to a mid-2012 top case & display), then yes since the all the other parts are the same.

You mean replace just the processor? Or do you mean the logic board complete with processor? Because they're soldered onto the logic board. It might theoretically be possible to remove a processor and solder on a new processor, but that likely more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks @HWTech and @babowa!

I never thought about changing out the Serial ATA drive with a SSD, but maybe something I’d consider down the road. I did max out the RAM 16GB or 32GB (can’t remember, but it was the reason I bought it... RAM not sodered in).

It’s not a retina screen... exactly as I post above. I had attached a photo, but it looked like a moderator pulled it bc it had the serial number on it.

Yes, I did see some videos on replacing the boards, but thanks for that heads up!

Thanks everyone! I understand now.

I just saw y_p_w's response about full replacements being in the $250 range and just confirmed. Good to know.

I thought I had found the Core i5 for ~$150 and the Core i7 for ~$190 (both used), but can't seem to find again.

I guess the only reason I would replace/repair is I won't be going Mac in the future and I have a MagicMouse II, cool vertical docking station for the Mid2012, a bunch of blocks, etc.... thus I have more then one fancy "paperweights".

Just read elsewhere the graphics card is integrated also... a problem given it doesn't support the resolution of my ultrawide monitor.

Thanks again all!
