I'm running Mojave on a MacBook Air with Preview and PDF Reader Lite. I use Preview for all my pdf's. AAR app is a huge file - 551 mb. is it OK to delete? Do I really need it? If so, for what purposes?

I always prefer to have more than one PDF reader as an alternative, your " PDF Reader Lite" I suspect serves this need.
Not all PDF are the same, an having an alternative can be what it takes to open and read.
Preview is not a true PDF editor like:
Adobe Reader
PDFpen
pdfExpert
etc.

Only you can possibly answer that. There's no way for us to tell you if you need a particular application or not.
Do you use it? Why did you install it in the first place?
Only you can decide whether you need it or not. If you use Reader Lite, over Acrobat, then you probably don't need it.
