In order to charge the mouse, must the computer be on the whole time? It does not seem to charge if I turn the computer off.

When I plug in the mouse to recharge it does not recharge unless I leave the computer on. That seems like a waste. Can I use some other outlet rather than the recharge unit that came with the iMac?

If you're using a USB port on your Mac, yes.

You can use just about any USB charging wall wart you want to charge it.
