A quick clarify question:
When you say it doesn't display the reader, do you mean it doesn't display the SD-card when you put it into the slot? The reader itself won't show up unless there is a working SD card in the slot. I'm assuming you meant the card showing up, but just checking.
The problem is likely either the reader itself, or the SD card. But it could be some software bug in macOS.
You can check to see if the reader itself is having problems but checking out the System Report. Click the Apple in the top-left of the menu, then click "About this Mac". In the "Overview" tab click the button towards the bottom that says "System Report".
On the left-hand side you should see a dropdown that says "Hardware" and under that should be "Card Reader". If you don't see that, or clicking on it gives you some error, then there is a hardware issue with your SD card reader that likely needs to be replaced by an Apple specialist.
To be warned, it may be expensive as these are usually soldered to the logic-board.
But it could be a bad SD card as these corrupt rather easily. Try a new SD card in the slot to see if it shows up. If it does, then that also points to the reader being bad.
If you have a portable SD card reader you could plug that into one of the USB ports to see if it reads the SD card.
Hopefully you'll be able to determine if the SD card itself is bad, or if it's the SD card reader.

Thanks for the reply. Your clarifying question is correct. It's not recognizing the card.
However, I checked the card and it is readable in another device. Also, the "About this Mac" shows the card reader hardware and card. Finally, I tried a different card, but to no avail.
Thanks for the try
Maybe it has something to do with the sd card? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204384
