how to make vlc the default media player on iMac pro

Should be easy enough, Catalina or not. Find a music file you want to play. Click on it to highlight it ,and do a Get Info on it. (Apple/Command + I together). You should get a little window, towards the middle-bottom where it says "Open with" then you can pick what application opens it. Then click on " Change all". That should do it.

Yup, you're right.....iTunes and/or the music app is kinda part of the system. Ok, let me take another swing at it.

Right click on the file you want to always open with VLC; in this case, MP3, Click 'Get info". In the 'Open With" section, pick VLC from the drop down menu. To apply this change to all files of this type, click the 'change all button' and if the Finder asks you if you're sure, click on 'Continue' and that's it. usually, there might also be something about "Always open with", but you can access that from the Finder menu. It used to be that iTunes handled everything, now iTunes has been simplified, and there's a Music app.
