How to play 24/96 audio files

How do I change the settings on an iMac so that I can play 24/96 audio files.

I have Amazon Music HD. On my previous iMac could play Ultra HD at 24/96 but I can only play them at 24/48 i.e. device capability my new iMac. In the past I was able to use audio Midi Setup app to change settings - best I can get is 48 kHz.

What am I missing?

I gather from your screenshots, despite selecting 96.0 kHz/2 ch 24bit, it doesn't switch? I don't know what that's about. You could try resetting the SMC and/or NVRAM.

Hi,

There was no option to select 96.0 kHz. Resetting PRAM did not do anything. Detached external Creative speakers fro headphone socket. I can now select and play 24/96 thru computer's speakers - seems that the external speakers are the problem but they worked OK with old computer.

Any other thoughts. Option pages in Midi App totally different from the images posted by you (that's what I see on my old Mac).

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I don’t think that the problem is with the Amazon app. The midi app and the headphone output seems to be the problem. I posted what my version of the midi app shows compared with Dialabrain’s version - this is what I see on my old iMac.

When I use the internal speaker I can play music from the Amazon app at 24/96. However when I plug in ether headphones or external speakers, the best I can get is 24/48. This is before using Amazon app.

The version of the midi app is shown as the latest version. Am I missing something in settings?

Me again. I don't think you're missing any settings. Have you updated to Catalina 10.15.7 yet? If not you could try that.

Something you could try, move the "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist" file to the trash but don't delete it yet. Then open Audio MIDI Setup and see if 24/96 is available. If so, go ahead and empty the Trash.

I see. Well I'm at a loss, unless there is some reason a 2019 21.5" iMac won't support 24//96 through the headphone jack which doesn't make much sense. I suppose if you have access to USB speakers to test you could do that. I'm not sure I would buy a pair to find out. If your iMac is still under warranty or under AppleCare you might want to talk to Apple Support.

FWIW, for a true quality output that gets the most out of

24/96 audio, you should really buy a quality external USB DAC.

Even though the internal DAC on the iMac may support the sample rate

and bit depth, it is more consumer level DAC (perhaps high side consumer).

Also, depending on your headphones, it may not have the drive to

deliver the full quality of 24/96 audio.
