My older Mac uses OS 10.12.5 and Safari version 10.1.1
I'm getting messages from sites I'm visiting that I need to update Safari, but I can't update the OS... any thoughts?

If your computer can run 10.12, it can run 10.13, which would let you upgrade to Safari 13. If the upgrade installs Safari 12, you might want to stick with that instead of upgrading Safari to version 13. You can look at the Safari community to see the problems people are having with version 13.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.
Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

Thanks Eric, very helpful... I've been searching for OS 10.13 but only find 10.13.1 and higher. All saying i need 10.13 as required for the update. Then , I found it but the pipe for the site must be pretty small, 9 hours for 5GB...
You are welcome. If you are now using High Sierra, you can check the App Store for a Safari upgrade. I personally wouldn't upgrade Safari to version 13. Based on what I have read in the Safari community, version 13 has a lot of bugs in it.
I appear to be in 13.0.4 and having no noticeable issues as yet. I am on the verge of not being able to run programs like WORD, EXCEL, PHOTOSHOP AND LIGHTROOM without subscribing moving forward so this computer will live out its useful life right where it is today...
Thanks again for your counsel, spot on and very helpful.
On this point (backups) I keep all of my saved data on an external and back up that external over night to a second. I also back up my hard drive which keeps applications etc to an external every overnight.
So, when I went to upgrade, I unplugged everything and worked only from the computer HD.. had anything gone wrong I would have rebooted from the HD backup.
Sage and appreciated advice, thank you.
Thanks for the information macjack . I am still reluctant to use Safari 13 based on what I've read. I realize the Support Community is the 'emergency room' and many others are using it without any problem, but having 4 updates already when Safari 12 only had 2 updates in a year, seems to indicate it wasn't properly tested before release.
You are welcome. That is fairly slow. Did the download finally finish? There is a link in the article I posted if you need to try again.
Thank you again... I followed the link, it worked much faster and it's done. Safari jumped from 10.1.1 up to 11.1.2. I'll get a bit more use from this ole iMac before it retires.
FWIW I'm running Safari 13.0.4 in High Sierra with no issues. I've also upgraded Safari through all the 10.13 versions so far with no issues.
You are welcome.

That's nothin'! Do you use an iPhone? 😎
Just an iPad and it is too old to update to IOS 13. 😱
