Apple Watch face animation (moon, solar system, earth) is broken when going between face and home screen

All I want is for the solar system/moon/earth animations to work when pressing the digital crown to leave the home screen and return to the watch face. It worked splendidly when I first got the watch, and briefly worked after the most recent OS update, but now it has gone back to the broken behavior: instead of smoothly animating from the clock face to the moon it just briefly shows a plain white circle which jumps abruptly to the moon/earth/solar system face after a moment.

I have tried rebooting the watch, deleting all but one face, re-configuring the face in all possible ways, but it always breaks. This seems like an incredibly basic and simple function for three of the stock faces and it baffles me that Apple ships this watch feature in this broken of a state.
