when you open the health app, and you are in the summary space as a first thing you see the Favorites, with the steps and activities, in order to ad also the distance you have to press on edit (it's in blue up on the right corner of the favorites) once you click it it opens a page full of options that you can choose for display on your device by by clicking the empty star on the right, in order to activate the distance in miles you have to press on "walking + running distance" (is the second from last in the activity category, that it is the first that you have from the top) once you press the star it's gonna be full, that means that you have activated it and you should be able now to see how many miles you have done today every time you open the app under the favorite section.

Thanks that did help and then I saw you can add it as a favorite and not have to look anywhere else. Apple is making too many layers or clicks to see more data in favor of a “clean” looking design which is unfortunate.
Click “Show All Health Data” (just below steps), then find “Walking & Running Distance” (also just below steps).
