Many Carplay issues on latest ios in BMW

The latest ios update has caused havoc with my 2018 bmw’s carplay. It often freezes when you start the car and won’t actually open the carply screen. To get it to work, I have to switch from carplay to bluetooth and then back to carplay in my car media display. And when it starts working, the app integrations are hit or miss. Browsing into the Amazon music app creates the infinite spinner. Spotify contents are current on the phone but stale in the carplay interface, etc. I just got a new phone hoping it would fix it, but the same issues exist. Is anyone else seeing this? For the crazy $300 add-on fee to use carplay in a bmw, I would expect this to work flawless.
