Verification code on iTouch gen 4

I’m having trouble entering the verification code on a 4th gen iTouch running iOS 6.1.6. Was never asked for this before so don’t know how two factor identification was turned on for this device.

I receive the code and enter it in the password field right after my password (no spaces) but get the incorrect password message every time. Any suggestions? iPod isn’t much use if I can’t download new music. (Still using an old one because I downloaded a pretty extensive CD collection and don’t want to have to do that again.)
