I would like to gift a season of a TV show to a friend for Christmas, but it doesn't look like I can do this with the Apple TV app. I only have the option to purchase for myself... How do I gift it?
iTunes is not being abandoned. The iTunes Application on Mac was split into 3 apps for on macOS Catalina only. The iTunes application continues to exist and be supported and updated on macOS versions older than Catalina, Windows, and iOS devices just fine. And the iTunes Store platform will continue to exist and be used to buy and rent media and well as gift it for the forseeable future.
The Apps in Catalaina still connect to and make use of the iTunes Store platform.
To gift items you need to do so from an iOS device.

You cannot gift movies or tv shows or from an Apple TV. You will need to do so from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

The iTunes Store is only related to the iTunes application for a shared history. The purchasable TV seasons are (still) being sold by the division called the “iTunes Store”. The gift cards for that store are (still) called “App Store & iTunes Gift Card”.
So I have to send a gift through the iTunes store even though iTunes is being abandoned in favor of separate applications: Apple Music, Apple TV, etc?
