itunes "check for new software updates automatically" is missing

I updated my computer to Mojave several months ago. Since then, iTunes no longer checks for updates for my iPhone 11. I have to manually click to check for an iOS update. When there's a new update, iTunes has a popup that tells me to go to iTunes Advanced pane and turn on "check for new software updates automatically".

However, there is no such item to turn on. See the screen shot below.

How do I turn on the auto update when it doesn't exist?

I have iTunes 12.9.5.5 and Mojave 10.14.6.

If I tell iTunes to look for an update, it will .. it's just that iTunes isn't automatically looking for updates like it used to (or like it's supposed to) and there doesn't appear to be anyway to enable that function as seen above. So what's missing is within iTunes.

iTunes in Mojave is baked into the operating system. It gets updated when the OS does. I haven't used iTunes to update a device in ages but my recollection is that if you view the device's summary page in iTunes it will tell you if there is updated firmware available.

I don't know. In Windows or earlier versions of Mac I'd suggest reinstalling iTunes, but there isn't a way to do that in Mohave short of reinstalling the OS.
