Mail not displaying properly

Mail is changing the fonts and not displaying properly. After a restart it's fine, then it just suddenly changes to this:

And also, any attempt to go into the Preferences to change anything results in an empty black box. Only a restart brings anything back. It's not just mail from others, it's mail I've sent to others as well.

I've done the restore to original fonts via Font Book and it's still doing it. Any other ideas? It's not doing this for every email, which is strange. Thanks in advance!

Ok. Managed to do that and run First Aid. Nothing. Still having the same issue. I think the problem lies somewhere with a security setting, but I've checked what I know in both Mail and in the System Preferences and the Load Remote Content is on. I have no firewalls. My husband, running similar equipment and OS, has had zero problems with his Mail app.

I found this old thread with a similar problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6638240

I'm not running Little Snitch or any firewall for that matter. My iPhone and iPad have no problem getting these emails. This only started after the Catalina upgrade.
