WHAT IF I DO NOT USE ONE OF THOSE PHONE COMPANIES?

If you are trying to purchase with the 0% interest option you have to purchase from one of the 4 majors. If you don't care about the 0% interest you can purchase the unlocked model.
No one here works for Apple as this is a user to user only forum. To my knowledge the only way you can use Apple Card to finance iPhone is if you use one of the cellular carriers they specify. You can use any other credit card you want, just not the Apple Card.
Otherwise, you need to take this up with Apple as we are not privy to their requirements.
