Slternative software for Adobe Illustrator?

Can anyone suggest the best alternative software for Adobe Illustrator. I need to make some changes in AI files. Thanks.

The non-subscription, Affinity Designer, in the Mac App Store. Free trial from the Affinity product site. The Affinity products (Designer, Photo, and Publisher) are callable from their respective menus, and operate on a single data file designed for this purpose. Export to many graphic formats including current PDF/A, PDF/X specifications. Designer can use select Photoshop plug-ins, and read both Photoshop and Illustrator files.

What about the free source Inkscape? Is it any good? I am paying subscription Photoshop and LightRoom, and paying for Adobe Illustrtator, just to use it a few times per year, its ridiculous. Adobe should provide a a few times per month free use of other applications, since I have been their client for 20 years as stand alone applications and now subscribing for 5 years already.
