An odd thing happened whilst I was doing work on my desktop Mac. A request for a network connection popped up on my screen - "So-and-so is requesting a network connection" - and it had my neighbour's name as the person making the request. They never asked me for it, and I would never have allowed it as we're not that close. Has anyone had a similar experience? I just want to know if I should be concerned.

I suggest that you check the settings for your ‘Sharing’ and make sure that ‘Network Sharing’ is disabled. You can locate this under System Preferences > Sharing.
I also recommend that you have your Firewall enabled for further protection of your Mac. This resource can provide you with additional info: OS X: About the application firewall
