Why can't I type in a search box using OS Catalina on my iMac? I can do it on my laptop with Mojave.

You need to learn how to use Finder. Windows and Mac OS are different operating systems, one does not mimic the other. You can also search for a file using Spotlight. I have included some links for you to study so you can learn a little more about Mac OS.
