Apple programmed automatic maintenance into macOS and you paid them good money to benefit from this foresight. Third-party "cleaning/tuneup" apps are very nearly scams because their developers know the macOS has automated maintenance. Even worse, these third-party fearware products compete with Apple's built-in routines causing performance and stability issues.
The only background defense product any of the senior contributors here recommend is MalwareBytes. The developer is a long-serving and respected member of Apple Discussions. Malwarebytes is excellent against adware that gets past Apple's malware system because a user allowed it. As it was not simply 'ported" from Windows but written for Macs, it does not extract a performance penalty.
Something to remember: Just because an app is in the App Store does not mean Apple endorses it.

No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system. Your Mac has all the built-in protection you need.
AppStore apps aren't tested for efficacy. As long as they meet AppStore guidelines for development they are accepted.
Sounds like another PUP (potentially unwanted program). There is a long list to be avoided, causing more harm then good.
What issue are you having, leading you to believe you need this PUP?
thanks. very helpful replies!
