my boyfriend has an iPhone XR and we were in the sun in Cape Verde and his phone suddenly stopped working. We tried it in rice as well as other things, have you got any suggestions

Rice? did it suffer liquid damage? Should be this case... it could be internally damaged.
Shouldn't be this case, try a forced restart of that device:--> Force restart iPhone – Apple Support
