my new phone seems to be linked somehow to my old iPhone, when I delete a number on my old iPhone it deletes it on my new iPhone, Why?

Transferring to a new phone I’m upgrading to an iphone XS to the 14 pro. I’ve basically never backed up my icloud and am worried it’ll affect something when I go to transfer data from the old phone to the new one. Once the data is complete, I hope to keep the old phone and give it away to someone else to use. However when I erase all data from it, wont it keep my number? How does that work? iphone transfer to new phone Just transferred from iphone 6 to iphone 12. Only after I did this did I realise that I hadn't updated my whats app number (from previous country I was living in) to my new number. I proceeded to do this but there has been no notification to all my contacts, especially whats ap, of the change in mobile number. On transferring phones I also seem to have lost the last three weeks of whats app messages.Anyone know why this has happened and how to fix it?

added iphone do you know when you add a new iphone and it adds a number at the end? how do i change that number if the other iphones are not in use

Because you're signed into the same iCloud account on both of them and syncing the contacts to your iCloud account. Any changes made on one will be reflected on the other.
