RAM upgrade... OWC says more RAM than Apple does???

So my question is that I went to Apple's site to inquire about adding more RAM into my MBP (late 2009) and it says only 8Gb is the max... however, OWC says that it accepts 16Gbs?

Anyone know the answer to this before I order more RAM?

Thank you!

i love my mbp and upgraded it immediately with 8Gb RAM... then added an SSD 2 years ago and recently added a 1TB SSD so sadly this thing blows all my other computers away! I never looked back at the RAM until I had to repair a friends iMac and after upgrading it to an SSD discovered that the RAM for mine could be bumped even higher!
so being behind is not the issue... this thing has out performed for years and was never in question until I saw that it could be upgraded further... but thanks for your input.

No doubt. I feel the same about my mid-2012 a real work horse.

I am happy for you that you have just now discovered 16GB recognized capacity—it will make a huge difference in the amount of apps you leave open at all times. Vive la 2009.

The price certainly has dropped considerable since its release in 2009.

Apple specs for the my 2012 was exactly the same scenario when released new.

My 2011 MBP is about to be replaced (well, "supplemented" with a more reliable primary). My 2011 cannot run the most current OS, and there are no more security updates. It also is stuck at FW800 as the fastest external interface instead of USB3.1 (very very fast) and Thunderbolt 3.

Most people who I seen defending running such old technology have a reason, for example to run Snow Leopard because they need the applications that have been long since abandoned.

Good luck, happy travels.

Don't Outdo Apple; Backup your Mac:

Well, Vendors are third-party, while Apple is Apple.

Point being: Why risk a damaged Mac? Don’t outdo your device’s performance expectations.

Time Machine Backup:

If you decide to go forward with this, then create a Time Machine Backup.

Go Here: Backing up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.

Once you have this backup made, you will have something to recover your Mac from, should all fail after the upgrade.
