Apple Watch first generation pairing and updating problems

We have two Apple Series 0 watches (first gen) that we haven’t used. We are running iOS 13 on a 11 pro and also iOS 13 on an iPhone 7.

We have tried to update both watches but they are both stuck on WatchOS 1.0.1 and it says that software is up to date. I can’t update or pair any of them. How do I update them to WatchOS 4 or is that not possible and so I have to throw the watches away??! I have also tried an old iPhone running iOS 11, but same issue.

The watches might still be paired to another phone,if that's the case then you'll have to remove them from the icloud account that was used to set them up with.

One of them is not paired at all, it has been erased, but still the same problem. Of I try to pair it, it says that the watch software has to be update, but when I try to do that, it says that the watch has WatchOS 1.0.1 and is updated.

So I get stuck and can’t update the watch from WatchOS 1.0.1 and can’t pair it.
