Text Replacement on Mac OSX not working but still there

I came across this problem where, after startup, my text replacements didn't work anymore even though they were still there in the System Preferences under Keyboard>Text.

Here's how I resolved this problem and got it to work again:

Simply add a new, perhaps temporary, text replacement. In my case that was:

Replace: blahblah

With: Here goes some blah blah text which is an alternative to lorem ipsum text

Close your System Preferences.

Go back to Safari or wherever you are using them – most IDEs like TextWrangler, Sublime Text, TextMate, Espresso, etc. don't allow you to use Text Replacements – and test it out.

Voilá. Text replacements are back in full force.
