iPhone backup to an external hard drive

i`m trying to back up my phone to my MacBook, but it does not have enough hard drive space. how can i back it up to an external hard drive, please and thank and merrrrrryyyyy christmas.

Basically, you have two choices:

There was a way to move the iTunes library (including iOS backups) to an external drive. Not sure how that would be done with the current setup in Catalina where iTunes functions have been separated into Music, TV, and iOS/iPad OS.
