iPad 7th gen not send/receive SMS

I have recently purchased a brand new iPad 7th GEN, and have gone through setting up a new account, Apple ID and all. But when I go into messages in setting I cannot select the number on the SIM card, (it’s not there at all). I have added the number to the Apple ID but can’t select it in messages.
