I am thinking about purchasing iTunes match so I can get rid of the hundreds of physical cds but I don't want to rip them just to get the tracks available. My son thinks he was able to just insert a cd and if itunes match recognized it automatically made the tracks available. What's the skinny here?

You need to import the tracks to your iTunes/ Music library. Subscribe to iTunes Match – Apple Support
Once you have imported the music, I suggest that you backup to an external drive.

The Music needs to be on your computer for iTunes Match to work. I’m afraid that you will need to rip all your CDs and add them to iTunes/ music library. iTunes Match will scan your library to determine what tracks can be matched or needs to be uploaded.
