You do not say what exact Mac /model /year /size /retina /touchbar is this ?
Reboot
Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Launch the Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup.app and see if there is anything there.
older Macs had an issue where the headphone out-put would get stuck when the jack was removed—looking in there for a red light, would indicate the mechanical switch did not flip back to internal speakers.
