How is my lost iPad going to connect to WiFi if you first need to unlock the device and then it will look for available WiFi networks? How will it connect if it’s locked with the passcode? How will they see my phone number and message?

If they figure out your passcode, they would get access to your data, but still would not be able to restore the device because of Activation Lock, which uses your Apple ID and password, not your passcode. While the chances of getting the device back are not always the best, keeping it in your iCloud account will keep Activation Lock on the device and prevent them from restoring and activating it for their use.

First off, Apple does not get involved in tracking any lost or stolen devices. That would be up to you by using Find My iPad. You are correct, that if the device does not connect to a known wi-fi network, then it cannot be tracked. If you put the device into locked mode, then the message and phone number will appear on the lock screen. They do not have to unlock it to see it. Once it runs out of battery, it cannot be tracked. You won't see if they connect it to charge, unless it is connected to a known wi-fi network. Unfortunately, that is the one drawback about the iPad is the fact it is not always connected like an iPhone. If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen - Apple Support

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your explanation.

So you say they will see my phone and message on the lock screen but that will be only if it’s connected to a known WiFi network, correct?

I left my iPad on a plane one LAX. Since I have been on the LAX WiFi I assume it connected to the WiFi there and my iPhone was telling me it was on terminal 6 where I arrived.

Does that mean that when they opened the message was displayed?

it told me for two days that it was on the terminal 6 and then after that someone took it and gave me an address in Comptom, CA

No, it will see the message when the screen is awakened. If you saw an address in Compton, was this a text message, or were you tracking the device? If you received a message that the device was found, it is very possible this message was a scam by the thief to get you to log into your account credentials. If you logged in directly from the message, you may have provided them the information they needed to turn off Find My iPad and restore the iPad to factory. Does it still appear in Find My iPad? Did you have a passcode on the device?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have a passcode on the iPad.

The addresses I mentioned I was seeing those I was seeing them when I looked at the iPad location on the Find My App.

For two days it gave me the location that it was on LAX Terminal 6. I kept calling lost and found and they kept telling me it could take three days to get to them. I guess it goes by stations.

Then I assume an employee stole it and the iPad never made it to the final

lost and found office.

I was tracking it with my iPhone and I could see where they were driving for a while. Then they stopped for a while at a house in Compton. Then after that it seems like if they left and the address from the house across got registered and then after that I didn’t get any more updates so I assume it’s when the battery died.

Nobody has contacted me. What I was referring to is when are they going to see my message with my phone number if the iPad has no WiFi?

At this point they need to plug it and as soon as they do then I will be able to see again where it is.

I don’t understand why they want it for if they can’t do anything with it.

I logged a police report and as I understood they are going to do a search warrant at that address.

From what I read the reason I was able to track the location even though the iPad doesn’t have WiFi is because Apple uses Bluetooth to transmit the location when there are Apple devices nearby. So I assume the person that stole it has an iPhone and from their iPhone my iPad was transmitting the location.

Thanks a lot! I will keep it on lost mode and that way no one will be ever able to use it.

I have all my information on iCloud and my iCloud backup so I really didn’t loose anything.

Already ordered one and then I will be restoring the backup soon.

Hopefully the police gets somewhere with the address. They could also if they want to really investigate see which employee of terminal 6 in LAX lives in Compton.

I will keep checking the location in case they plug it in.

How is my lost iPad going to connect to WiFi if you first need to unlock the device and then it will look for available WiFi networks? How will it connect if it’s locked with the passcode? How will they see my phone number and message?
